Description
Up for auction is an original window card (advertisement poster) forThe New Fats Waller Musical Review
'Ain't Misbehavin'.
The musical opened May 9 1978 at the Longacre Theater, 48th St West of Broadway and the original cast featured
Nell Carter, Andre DeShields, Armelia McQueen Ken Page and Charlaine Woodard and was directed by Richard Maltby.
The poster illustration
was created by
acclaimed theater poster artist James McMullan and bears his signature.
The show ran until Feb 1 1982 with 1604 performances and 14 previews. The original pianist for the musical production was Luther Henderson. A likeness of Fats Wallace can be seen playing the piano with his trademark cigarette hanging from his mouth.
The original revue in it's first year (1978) won Tony awards for Best Musical, Best direction of a Musical, and Best
Performance for a featured actress in a Musical. It also won a Theater World Award and a Drama Desk Award.
Featured actress Nell Carter picked up the majority of the awards.
Condition:
This poster has been hung on a wall probably with tape as can be seen on all four corners shown in the photos.
It has been folded in half, stained and soiled to some extent and generaly treated fairly carelessly in my opinion.
It has other cosmetic damage and flaws including creases, stains and soiling, all of which are shown in the photos. There are no holes or rips.
No doubt the majority of the careless handling and storage was long ago when the poster was first displayed.
For the past 30 years, i
t has been in a collection, flaws and all and hung on a wall, framed and under glass. I removed the frame when I purchased the piece as it was just a cheap plastic frame, damaged and very wobbly. The frame is not included in this auction.
